Avoncroft Museum - a photographers review.

As a wedding photographer, I love to go to unusual places to photograph weddings. In 2016 I was asked to photograph a reception at Avoncroft Museum, which is nestled in farmland, close to Bromsgrove town centre with easy access off the A38 and M5. Avoncroft is a beautiful location for a wedding reception. Within the grounds is New Guesten Hall which is the main location for a civil wedding and/or a reception.

The Hall has a beautiful carved wooden ceiling and also the Weaver Gallery from which to take either pictures during the speeches or to capture the party atmosphere during the evening.

I photographed at Avoncroft in the last week of April 2016 and although the day saw many showers, there were still lots of places other than the main hall, where we could go, without the bride getting her dress dirty. One of the obvious choices is The Windmill that sits dominating the skyline and overlooking the countryside.

Next to the windmill are two very old oak trees and as it was spring when I was there, they were still bare of leaves, making for a lovely silhouette, backlit by the sun.

I returned again in summer to see how the location had changed from spring. What I really like about Avoncroft is that there are lots of shady places to do photographs.

All photographers will tell you that whilst a bride may wish for a clear blue sky in summer, it makes for difficult photographs. It causes people to squint when the sun is high. So a wedding venue with shady areas is great. Once you have exhausted your wedding photographer by the windmill, there are some other lovely buildings for even more photographs.

If you want quirky, there is the Dovecote:

If you want some steps to show off your dress, there is The Granary:

Another location amongst the trees is the Spire, a beautiful building that looks great in spring and summer:

Or if you want to step back in time, take a look at the Town House:

All in all and from a wedding photographers point of view, Avoncroft is a great place for a wedding or reception. There are lots of great locations that look great in either spring or summer, and I would imagine even more beautiful in frost or snow.
